Our Statues, Ourselves

Cleveland's downtown loves its statues. They show the city as it wishes to be seen.


This statue is featured in a poster showing a native's view of the city.




Lawmakers standing rather uneasily over the county courthouse.


The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. I asked the person inside at the Information desk why the left statue appears to be holding a severed hand -- of a thief, perhaps? He found a tourbook that said it was the "rod of responsibility." He'd walked in and out of the building for years and never noticed the statue's upheld hand.
